The Cost of Doing Business

This is all a bit difficult to explain, but here goes: Headless Owl Records and You’ve Changed Records teamed up this week to bring a big gang of artists together in the Yukon to make a record together and put on a couple of big shows. Early last weekend, Baby Eagle, Marine Dreams, Construction & Destruction, Shotgun Jimmie, Richard Laviolette, Wax Mannequin, Kyle Cashen, Mike Feuerstack, and The Burning Hell arrived in Whitehorse and got straight to work at a lovely studio in the woods, making sounds together and enjoying the good vibes.

Each artist brought a new song with them, and we all formed mini-supergroups to record each one. “You, you’re on bass! And you, you’re on guitar! Who plays the bongos?” That kind of thing.

At night, we were busy rehearsing for our two big Cost of Doing Business shows in Whitehorse and Dawson City. Along the way, we managed a few Yukon excursions too – see the photo above? That’s us (minus Mathias and Richard, who were busy taking pictures) at the Takhini Hot Springs, enjoying a nice post-recording soak. Good times!

For those of you not lucky enough to live in the Yukon, stay tuned in 2014 for the release of our collaborative, as yet untitled album. The amazing cherry on the music-cake is that the incredible Shary Boyle has been up here all week with us, working on artwork and projections for the show, and brewing up some potential eventual album artwork too!

It’s been an honour and a blessing to know and work with all of these amazing people, and I’ll never forget it. In the words of Shotgun Jimmie, life is a miracle. Cha cha cha.
